Police District Council members are beginning the open application process to fill all seven seats of the citywide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA).
Good Morning! I’ll be live-tweeting the Chicago Police District Council’s Nominating Committee meeting for @CHIdocumenters #CHIdocumenters. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
08:59 AM Sep 30, 2023 CDT

We’re here at Malcolm X College, Room 4303. With 17 members present, a quorum is met.

There is no public comment. The committee is now going over meeting norms and recent updates.

Since their last meeting, Superintendent Snelling has been confirmed by the City Council.

The initial application review process for Commissioner Applications is being looked over by the committee.

The Nominating Committee members are tasked with nominating a shortlist of candidates for the mayor to appoint to the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability.

The nominating committee is discussing how to verify the qualifications of applicants. That includes reference checks, employment, education, and residence.

The committee is considering what parts of the application should be anonymized to ensure a non-biased process.

Information being considered for anonymizing includes name, age, gender, nationality, residential address, zip code, education, employment, membership or associations, hobbies, and photo.

The committee is considering an appeals process for applicants who were rejected. A poll will take place to determine when applications will be deanonymized.

The poll of the nominating committee members has ended. The nominating committee favors de-anonymizing the applications after the first pass of scoring. Now onto the rubric development.

The nominating committee members have been asking community members what they want in candidates for the commission. Strategies for more youth involvement and community engagement are being discussed.

These discussion topics (application review, rubric, and rotating chairs proposal) will be finalized in late October through the committee’s working groups.

The rotating chairs proposal discussion is underway. The proposal says the nominating committee will have four chairs. The nominating committee’s working groups will select a member to serve as chair.
