The goal of the acquisition is to facilitate re-tenanting for a new neighborhood grocery store. The property used to be an Aldi’s grocery store.

Council members ask why is the city purchasing property with no prospective tenant. A representative from DPD says the city is trying to reduce food deserts.

Ald. Burnett (27) says it’s important to not let this community go backward. Says this area has suffered since the riots following Dr. MLK’s death.

Council members want DPD to help in their wards to reduce food deserts. They want equitable distribution of DPD’s help throughout the city.

Council members want a clear policy on how DPD’s acquisition power is used.
