Regular City-County Council Public Works Committee meeting.
Hi, I’ll be live-tweeting today’s Indianapolis City-County Council Public Works Committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. for #indydocumenters @indydocumenters @mirrorindy
04:01 PM Apr 17, 2025 CDT

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The Indianapolis City-County Council Public Works Committee handles all of the city and county's environmental and infrastructure concerns, including trash pickup, snow removal, solid waste management, street paving, and traffic controls.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy You can find more information about the Public Works Committee at indy.gov/activity/publi…
indy.gov/activity/publi…

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy There are 12 members that make up the Indianapolis City-County Council Public Works Committee: Kristin Jones, D-District 18, Chair Josh Bain, R-District 21 Dan Boots, D-District 3 Derek Cahill, R-District 23

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The other 8 members are: Crista Carlino, D-District 11 Michael Dilk, R-District 24 Jared Evans, D-District 17 Ron Gibson, D-District 8 Jessica McCormick, D-District 16 Brian Mowery, R-District 25 Andy Nielsen, D-District 14 Nick Roberts, D-District 4

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Today's agenda will cover Proposal No. 109, 2025 which reappoints Kenneth Beache to the Marion County Stormwater Management Technical Advisory Committee. Also on today's agenda is the Quarterly Update as well as the Solid Waste Procurement Update.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The reappointment of Kenneth Beache was moved to the next meeting as Kenneth is feeling under the weather and could not be present today.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy They are discussing Solid Waste Management and the new trucks that are in service.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy In February, Indy DPW received approval by the Indy MPO for 35 million dollars.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Nick Roberts asked for clarification of the Myovision (sp?) technology, which are cameras installed at intersections to monitor traffic.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Jared Evans has questions about the street sweeping and wants to know about if the areas that have stormwater drainage are to be street swept. There is a dedicated area that is to be swept once a year.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Todd Wilson said that the thoroughfares and main roads will get patched first, when asked how the potholes could get done earlier in the year.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Girls School Road will be getting patched soon, although there is not a start date yet.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy I have actually reported some of those Girls School Road potholes in the Request Indy app myself so this is good news for me personally!

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy There was actually a neighborhood that a boy scout troop self patched a bunch of potholes.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Joshua Bain wants to know why we do not use contractors to patch potholes. The subject will be looked into further.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy We have 16 total street sweeper trucks, where we used to only have 5 so shouldn't the amount of street sweeping increase with more trucks?

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy That wraps up the Quarterly Update. Up next is the Solid Waste Procurement Update...

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The vendors being used for solid waste procurement include: Reworld, South Side Landfill, and WM.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Trash collection for districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 10 is awarded to Lakeshore Recycling Systems. The remaining districts 5, 7, 8, and 11 will continue to be serviced by DPW Solid Waste & AFCSME Local 725.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Beginning in 2028, the city in partnership with LRS, will begin to transition to universal curbside recycling.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Biweekly recycling will continue to be provided on a subscription basis for 2026-2027 at a decreased cost.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy City currently pays $11.25 a unit per month for trash collection, the new contract price is $7.88.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Per-ton disposal costs for non-recyclable materials will not meaningfully change, the processing cost for recycling will be based on several factors, including: Program utilization, commodity value of recycled materials, and contamination rates.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Subscription customers will see a slight fee decrease in 2026-2027. Universal curbside recycling will cost $3.87/unit/month in 2028 for biweekly collection.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy There is a lot of concern about the transition of the trash carts and how long residents will have carts from both companies before the old carts are picked up and the question of will the old carts be recycled, which they will be.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy $7 million + in annual savings compared to current baseline. Annual savings compared to baseline grows to $10 million/year by the end of contract term.

@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. This concludes the Indianapolis City-County Council Public Works Committee meeting. The next meeting is for the Environmental Sustainability Committee and is scheduled for Apr. 21, 2025. For more meeting coverage, check out . documenters.org
