The Civil Service Commission has authority to conduct investigations of conditions in the City workforce. It also hears appeals of employees receiving discipline, hears appeals for rejected applications, considers leave of absence requests, and many other personnel matters that can affect the Classified Service. The Civil Service Commission annually reviews classification and salary issues to ensure that the classification and salary relationships are appropriate.

The City of San Diego’s Office of Boards and Commissions was created in 2018 to support the day-to-day operations for the City’s 49 boards and commissions and serves as an access point to the volunteer members appointed by the Mayor and City Council.

These entities serve in a fiduciary, regulatory, policy-setting and/or advisory capacity. The Office includes the existing executive directors and staff positions that support the following: Accessibility Advisory Board, Commission for Arts and Culture, Community Review Board on Police Practices, Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention, and Human Relations Commission.
